History

Benjamin Stoddert Photo

In 1798, under the presidency of John Adams, Benjamin Stoddert became the first secretary of the Navy. During his four-year term, he helped build a fleet of vessels powerful enough to compete with those of the French. Stoddert also helped draft the bill that established the modern U.S. Marine Corps.

Before becoming secretary of the Navy, Stoddert, a Georgetown businessman at the time, and one of his business associates bought several tracts of land in the District of Columbia at the request of President George Washington. Stoddert later sold the tracts of land to the government. This was done to prevent speculation when the capital moved from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.

Stoddert was born in Charles County in 1751. He died in Bladensburg, Md., on Dec. 18, 1813.
