We believe that ALL children can learn and we are committed to preparing every child for college through a rigorous course of study. Our staff is dedicated to knowing every child and assisting him or her as he/she develops through these challenging pre-teen years. We work closely with our community to provide opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and abilities. Our students are recognized for their participation in a wide variety of extracurricular clubs and activities as well as sports and the arts. Having been selected as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Benjamin Stoddert continues to promote personal responsibility, academic achievement and career readiness for every student. We encourage you to visit our school and become part of our "Stoddert Family". Together we are preparing the future!
In 1798, under the presidency of John Adams, Benjamin Stoddert became the first secretary of the Navy. During his four-year term, he helped build a fleet of vessels powerful enough to compete with those of the French. Stoddert also helped draft the bill that established the modern U.S. Marine Corps.
Before becoming secretary of the Navy, Stoddert, a Georgetown businessman at the time, and one of his business associates bought several tracts of land in the District of Columbia at the request of President George Washington. Stoddert later sold the tracts of land to the government. This was done to prevent speculation when the capital moved from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.
Stoddert was born in Charles County in 1751. He died in Bladensburg, Md., on Dec. 18, 1813.
